native American Program
In an effort to raise students’ academic achievement, the Tempe Elementary School District Native American Program (N.A.P.) apply for two federally funded programs, Title VI and Johnson-O'Malley (JOM). Native American education supplemental funds are made available through the Indian Education Act to meet the specialized and unique educational and culturally related academic needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students.
Parents indicating American Indian ethnicity on Tempe Elementary School District’s student registration forms may be eligible for Title VI and/or Johnson-O'Malley (JOM) services. In order to be eligible for Title VI, the student must have a completed Indian Student Certification (506) form on file in Tempe School District's Native American Program Office. Mandatory information that must be provided on the 506 involves the name of the Indian tribe for which membership is claimed, parent's signature and date the form was signed. It should be noted that contrary to JOM eligibility, Title VI student eligibility is based on tribal affiliation and not dependent upon tribal enrollment. In contrast, JOM students must be 1/4 or more degree Indian blood or recognized by the Secretary of the Interior as being eligible for Bureau services. The student's Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB), or letter of enrollment from the Tribe is required for JOM along with a completed 305 form. Parent meetings are held six times a year.
